Pennington to the Dolphins
Posted On 08/09/2008 01:37:36 by morrisseyweb

So Chad Pennington gets released by the Jets and signs on in the division with the Dolphins. I can't believe the Jets didn't try to get SOMETHING for Pennington - which would seem to be their second questionable move this week.

Meanwhile, Pennington heads to South Florida to lead the moribund Dolphins and gets another shot at a starting gig. So in a week where Bret Favre - a sure fire first ballot hall of famer - heads to the Jets, my bet for the most improved team goes to the Dolphins. Pennington has a better shot of improving the 'Phins than Favre does at improving the Jets.

For sure, there's a reason Chad is out in New Jersey - he's constantly hurt and the franchise has lost all confidence in his ability to not be hurt; that and the eponymous resident of Giants stadium happened to win the Super Bowl last February (ack - I can feel the vomit in my mouth as I write that), stealing away any sort of pub the J-E-T-S might have had. But this guy can play.

When he's healthy, Pennington is a force to be reckoned with. While he might not have a rocket arm, he's solid. And definitely improves the prospects of the Dolphins season - coming into the preseason with Cleo Lemon as your starter can't help your prospects. So the AFC East improves a bit. A little competition is a good thing - after all, last year showed us how truly tired of the Patriots the rest of the country has become. Fact is though, the Patriots are still better than either the other teams in the division.

I was really hoping to see Chad on the Patriots sidelines this year - New England needs a quality backup something awful...of course, they weren't going to be paying what the Dolphins were, and so there you go. It wasn't going to happen.  He's 32 - still plenty left in the tank, so we'll see.  I'm thinking that the team that made out the best in the Bret Favre sweepstakes has now become clear - it was the Miami Dolphins.

Chad is a short yardage QB.  He's made for the west coast offense because of his limited arm strength.  In Miami, there are no real burners on the end other than Ted Ginn and he won't be able to separate that well from anyone (not yet).  He'll be servicable enough to move that offense as long as Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are healthy.  The Jets did the right thing.  I think Brett will get them to a Wild Card.  He's never been a by the rules QB so I expect the Jets to simplify the offense to give him that comfort zone.  Just like they did in Green Bay.

I agree with you completely on this one.  Miami stands to be the best improved team out there, and they were one of the teams in dire need of a capable QB.  Pennington had to have known that he wouldn't be out of work long when Favre showed up.
